VTI Japan participated in the “CIO Research Group & DX Conference Social Implementation Project Joint Meeting” hosted by the Japan Retail Association on March 18, 2026. The event brought together retail companies, government agencies, and IT firms to discuss the latest developments in retail DX and ongoing efforts toward product information standardization.
Addressing the Root Causes Behind “PoC Deadlock”
Presenting at the Retail IT Flash Talks segment of the conference, Mr. Tsutomu Abe, General Manager of the President’s Office at VTI Japan, pointed to a challenge that resonates widely across the industry: Despite repeated pilots and proof-of-concept projects, most retail companies find their DX initiatives unable to reach full deployment.
VTI Japan identified two structural root causes driving this pattern: The absence of a mechanism to embed AI into day-to-day business workflows, and a lack of clear, structured implementation architecture for retail DX – compounded by legacy system constraints, siloed data, and limited in-house development resources.
In response, VTI Japan proposed a layered implementation architecture designed to progressively build DX capability while leveraging existing systems:
- Integrating store and operations data at the foundation
- Building a retail data platform for real-time analytics and BI
- Deploying DX applications for demand forecasting, inventory optimization, and operational visibility.

The presentation also introduced the concept of Retail Decision Intelligence – a vision for the next stage of retail AI adoption. Where conventional analytical AI focuses on forecasting and reporting, Decision AI directly supports store-level judgment: shelf layout changes, ordering decisions, and promotional planning.
This shift is projected to deliver a 3–5% uplift in sales, a 10–15% reduction in waste, and a 30% reduction in operational hours – with AI handling decisions so that staff can focus on service and hospitality.
Looking Ahead: VTI Japan’s Commitment to Retail DX Execution
The conference reinforced that retail DX in Japan is moving beyond individual company initiatives into a new phase defined by industry-wide collaboration and standardization.
With the commitment to “Delivering DX beyond PoC,” VTI Japan remains dedicated to being the execution partner that takes retailers from concept to deployment, providing end-to-end support across Data Platform Development, Business System Development, AI Adoption, and Legacy System Modernization, backed by a Japan-focused team combined with offshore development capabilities.
VTI Japan will continue to support Japanese retailers in turning DX initiatives into full-scale implementation in line with these evolving industry trends.
