Optimizing Construction Operations with AI-Powered Solutions [Case Study]

March 25, 2024
VTI youngshine AI smart construction

This case study delves into our partnership with a prominent Korean construction corporation facing internal resource limitations. The customer seeks to develop a construction-planning simulation application. VTI leveraged AI technology, specifically reinforcement learning, to enhance the simulation application’s accuracy and optimize vehicle routes and costs.

Leveraging a skilled talent pool for construction planning

Our customer is Korea‘s leading corporation in the construction industry. Established in 1978, the customer has continuously disrupted traditional construction and opened up the future of smart construction in Korea. By integrating ICT technology into automation and safety solutions, the company seeks to improve construction site safety measures and optimize construction processes.

However, due to current internal human resource constraints, there’s a need to collaborate with VTI’s ample pool of skilled human resources.

The client seeks to develop a construction-planning simulation application that fulfills the following criteria:

  • Develop an algorithm to estimate the construction interval and cost, thereby optimizing vehicle quantities and operational routes for efficient construction execution.
  • Export the data generated after the calculating and simulating process

Implementing AI and Reinforcement Learning for construction simulation accuracy enhancement

VTI has applied AI technology in practice, particularly reinforcement learning, to enhance the accuracy of the simulation application. A reinforcement learning module has been developed to calculate the operating routes of each type of construction vehicle (bulldozers, rollers, excavators) and evaluate the terrain. This enables the accurate calculation of the number of vehicles, costs, and completion time.

Throughout the project development process, VTI has addressed unforeseen issues beyond the customer’s expectations, not only concerning the AI algorithm but also assisting the customer in resolving issues related to integrating the simulation system using the Unity Framework. For example, this framework is utilized to create maps with the customer’s 3D display.

The project operates under a full offshore model, involving skilled AI engineers and a project coordinator fluent in Korean. The development phases of this project are as follows:

Positive results and future partnership

Project communication flows smoothly, facilitated by the project coordinator’s fluency in Korean and strong technical expertise. This ensures timely and effective dissemination of information to the customer, even given the project’s technical complexity.

Following the successful integration demo of Phase 1, the client expresses high satisfaction with VTI’s project management and responsiveness, indicating a desire for further collaboration. Encouraged by this positive cooperation experience, the two companies signed an MOU on January 22, 2024, to enhance partnerships in smart construction technology.
