Our client, a top-tier retail company in Japan, operates over 496 stores nationwide, employs more than 215,500 individuals, and generates 10 billion yen in gross sales annually. As they prepare for a significant expansion of 1,000 new stores, their current system presents critical challenges, including difficulties in scaling rapidly to match the flexibility of competitors and the burden of high operational costs. To support this ambitious growth plan, the company requires a fast, scalable, and cost-efficient solution to overcome these limitations and ensure long-term success.

Cloud Migration and Managed Services: Optimizing Infrastructure for Scalable Solutions

1. Workload Migration:

In this project, VTI implemented three of AWS’s 6R Strategies for Cloud Migration: Rehost, Replatform, and Re-architect, to ensure a seamless transition and optimized cloud infrastructure:

  • Rehost (Lift and Shift): The Middle App previously hosted on GCP Compute Engine was migrated to AWS ECS with minimal changes, preserving its core functionalities while leveraging AWS’s infrastructure.
  • Replatform: The database hosted on Cloud SQL was moved to AWS RDS, involving slight adjustments due to the platform change. Similarly, the file storage system was migrated from GCP Storage to AWS S3, requiring modifications to APIs and data access mechanisms, with the integration of AWS’s native SFTP service for enhanced storage operations.
  • Re-architect: A significant transformation was undertaken for the Odoo App, which transitioned from GCP Compute Engine to AWS EC2. This migration involved re-engineering a monolithic application into microservices, enabling better scalability, flexibility, and alignment with modern cloud-native architecture principles.

2. Cloud Managed Services:

VTI provides comprehensive Cloud Managed Services designed to optimize and maintain cloud environments, ensuring high performance, cost efficiency, and seamless operations. These services include:

  • Infrastructure Management: Comprehensive monitoring and optimization of servers, storage, and networks to guarantee high availability, scalability, and security, including support for disaster recovery and system updates.

The project leveraged advanced technologies to deliver a robust and scalable solution:

  • Cloud infrastructure: Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) ensure flexibility and reliability.
  • Development framework: Django API
  • Database management: PostgreSQL
  • Business operations: Odoo, Frepple, Metabase, Celery, and RabbitMQ. These tools provide efficient task management, supply chain planning, and seamless communication between distributed systems. 

Enhanced Scalability and Performance through Cloud Migration

The migration of the Odoo store environment to AWS successfully restored and stabilized operations, eliminating previous performance bottlenecks that hindered scalability. This shift not only resolved critical performance issues but also enabled seamless expansion to all stores, accommodating rapid growth. Furthermore, the cloud infrastructure’s scalability allowed for more efficient resource management and quicker adjustments as new stores were added. As a result, the product’s time to market was significantly reduced, enabling faster rollouts of updates and new features, ultimately boosting overall operational efficiency and accelerating business growth.
